Kathie Olivas is a multi-media artist and the curator of Hyde Park Fine Arts, Inc. She has organized numerous exhibitions including the multi-gallery Avant Hop, He Said, She Said, Y2K Survival Sale and Auction, and is currently collaborating with Experimental Skeleton on a book project to benefit the Tampa Bay visual arts avant garde as a public arts project. She has had several solo exhibitions of her work and has also participated in many juried and invitational exhibitions. Recently, she was voted "Best Artist" by the Weekly Planet's annual "Best of the Bay 99" reader's poll. Her current work explores the ideas of trace and memory through historical context and iconography. By means of literary text and appropriated imagery, she takes on the roles of fictional characters, to try to explore the past generations that directly influenced the complex social structure to which she now finds herself apart of. In creating these collaborative "self-portraits" she experiments with combining traditional processes such as encaustic painting and photogravure, with newer, experimental techniques involving mixed media and installation that utilize time and environment as influential and deconstructive forces.
